Bank Holiday Beer

There's a bit of a star theme at the moment. Earlier in the week we had the wonderful Dark Star Hophead, which went in double quick time. This weekend we have two beers with star in their names. So, without further ado, here is what we are offering this weekend:

North Star Brewery-Pathfinder
Settle Brewery-Signal Light
Lincoln Green-Hood
Nine Standards-Original
Portobello-Star

Hope to see you today and/or tomorrow, if not have a great bank holiday weekend.

Please remember, Help for Heroes is our chosen charity and we have a collecting tin and wristbands on the bar.

In the meantime, continuing the star theme hope you enjoy this little number from James:

Weekend Beer, Pies, Outings and Festivals

It's all go at the moment but first, what are we offering the discerning drinker this weekend?

We have a little Barlow Heath Robinson left at 3.8%, a wonderful traditional red bitter from Nottingham. The Foxfield Princely Piper, a lovely golden coloured 5.1% is still on and there is more about the Prince of Wales at Foxfield a little later. From Wiltshire we have the Funnel Blower (stop tittering at the back) from Box Steam Brewery, a 4.5% vanilla porter. From Ulverston (more about Ulverston a little later too) we have Another Fine Mess at 4%.

Joining us today on the fifth pump will be the Marble Manchester Bitter at 4.2%.

Also on the stillage we have  the Cumberland Corby Blonde, Magpie Best and the Robust Porter from the new Fell Brewery at Flookburgh.

A date for your diaries now. We are planning our first beer festival in conjunction with the wonderful Brief Encounter Refreshment Rooms and the Station Heritage Centre. The date to pencil in is Friday 22 and Saturday 23 November. More details as plans are finalised.

We still have places left on our Snug Outing on Sunday June 2nd. We will be leaving by coach at 11-00am on Sunday June 2nd heading to the Prince of Wales at Foxfield then on to Broughton for an hour. Then we will be heading to the Ulverston Brewery Visitor Centre for a couple of hours aiming to be back in Carnforth around 7-00pm. The cost is £10 per person.

And finally, Wigan Bob will be in tomorrow lunchtime (Saturday) with his wonderful curry pies. Bob makes his own pies and offers them as a little blotter on a Saturday lunchtime. He doesn't charge, being a very generous chap, but he does ask for a donation to our bar top charity collecting tin, currently Help for Heroes.

I can't believe it's around 33 years since I dashed off to the record shop to buy Lou Reed's Growing Up In Public, but it is! So here's a little trip down memory lane from that album, the Power of Positive Drinking:

Weekend Beers

We start today with a little Marlpool Blind Boris (3.5%), a traditional dark mild that has been very popular.

From Titanic we have the return of the wonderful Plum Porter (4.9%) and also making a welcome return is the Nine Standards Silver Standard (4.3%). Also making a return is the Ringway Session (3.8%).

Making its debut is the Progressive Pale (5.1%) from the new Fell Brewery at Flookburgh.

Next up will be the Golden Bolt from Box Steam.

So many people have been sniffling with assorted bugs over this damp, mild winter that we've been praying for spring. But this week we've had our first couple of customers popping in sniffling and sneezing with the first symptoms of  hayfever. So for all those hayfever sufferers, I give you The Divine Comedy:

Hoppy Heaven

Well, hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday. Somebody said it was the first decent weather for this holiday since it was introduced thirty years or so ago. Should have made April 23 the bank holiday you see.

Well we still have that devilish brew from Ulverston on, the Fra Diavolo. Then we have the Blind Boris from Marlpool in Derbyshire, a lovely traditional dark mild. We also have a little Oxfordshire Ales Churchill left, an Honorary Pale Ale.

Now then. Those kind chaps at Hawkshead have kindly delivered a cask of Cumbrian 5 Hop which will be on tomorrow. But this is no ordinary Cumbrian 5 Hop, this one is a souped up version at 6%ABV. We believe this could be the only cask at this strength to go on sale in Lancashire and Cumbria. What a treat!

Limbering up on the touchline is the Grafton Jazz from Worksop, and The Fell Brewery Progressive Pale from Flookburgh.

Hope you can join us this week. I'm sure Gareth will be hammering the door down for a little piece of Hawkshead hop heaven. In fact he's made me feel terribly guilty about being closed today he is so excited about the 5 Hop. Not long now lad!

If you think today feels like heaven, wait until tomorrow:

Weekend Ale Treats

Time flies and these are exciting times. Only yesterday we had a chap from a new microbrewery call in with a couple of bottles of beer for us to try, and very good they were too. So I bought a couple of casks from The Fell Brewery in Flookburgh. Both will be appearing next week.

But for this weekend we offer the following fine ales:

Bowness Bay-Swan Blonde 4% (Cumbria)
Woodlands-Ash Blonde 4.1% (Cheshire)
Two Roses-Black Beauty Stout 5% (Yorkshire)
Stringer's-Hop Priest 6.5% (Cumbria)
Ulverston-Fra Diavolo 4.3% (Cumbria)

Next up will be Blind Boris from Marlpool Brewing in Derbyshire.

Fra Diavolo means Brother Devil and is the popular name given to Michele Pezza, an 18th/19th century Neapolitan guerrilla leader who resisted the French occupation of Naples, proving an inspirational practicioner of popular insurrection.

On that note let's go straight to hell, with The Clash:
